Trompe l'oeil

Trompe L'oeil is an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery, used to create an optical illusion that the depicted objects really exist instead of being 2 dimensional painting.

Although the phrase has its origin in the Baroque period, it might be used as a means of interior decoration to dramatically enlarge a room by introducing a window, door or perhaps a garden through an arch or formal group of pillars...

It can also be used on smaller items of furniture, tables, doors etc. Often depicting items sitting on them or hanging up on them, so real they draw the eye to explore the boundary between image and reality.
