Using marble over the centuries, to carve and embellish showed that the area in question was special. Many places of worship throughout Europe were covered in marble and it was thought to be highly sought after. Some areas in these places would have been nearly impossible to use real marble, due to its weight and also the size and high possition it might have been placed.
So, decorative artists reciprocated the real marble on wood or a plaster base, perfecting the colour and style and only if you were close enough to touch it, would you realise it was fake as it wouldnt be cold to the touch. These techniques are still used today.

There are also marbling techniques that are more fantasy than a copy of real marble, these faux finishes are used for the sole purpose of decorating to fit a specific colour scheme or create a feature.
Although based in Ireland, I can work on marbling projects in UK, Europe and further afield if required. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require further information about my services as a marbling artist.
